Navigation sensors can be directly connected to the ECDIS processor through its four serial I/O ports. To integrate onboard sensors into the navigation network, a sensor adapter can be connected to the HUB-3000 switching hub, enabling seamless distribution of sensor data across the network. Alternatively, multiple sensor adapters can be integrated via Ethernet, allowing onboard sensors to function within the shipboard network.  

The FMD-3100 is also capable of interfacing with existing FAR-21x7/FAR-28x7 series radars, facilitating radar overlay, target tracking information, and the exchange of routes and waypoints via Ethernet.

The FMD-3100 features a state-of-the-art chart-drawing engine that enables instant chart redraw, seamless zooming, and smooth panning, ensuring a stress-free user experience. Its operational design follows the familiar logic of a PC mouse, allowing full control via the trackball on the control unit. Users can navigate effortlessly using left-click, right-click, and the thumbwheel. Additionally, the ECDIS control unit includes a full QWERTY-style keyboard for easy naming of routes, events, and waypoints.

The FMD-3100 enhances operational efficiency by providing quick access to essential functions during vessel navigation. This advanced ECDIS introduces two intelligently designed graphical user interface elements: the Status Bar and the InstantAccess Bar™, enabling a task-based workflow that gives operators direct access to critical procedures.  
The Status Bar, located at the top of the screen, displays key operational information, including modes of operation and presentation settings. Meanwhile, the InstantAccess Bar™, positioned along the left edge of the screen, offers rapid access to functions specific to each ECDIS mode. Its contents dynamically update based on the mode selected in the Status Bar, ensuring a seamless and intuitive user experience.  
This combination of the Status Bar and InstantAccess Bar™ simplifies virtually all operations, eliminating the need to navigate complex menu structures. As a result, the FMD-3100 optimizes navigation monitoring, reduces the risk of errors and confusion, and enhances situational awareness for safer and more efficient vessel operation.

Fully compliant with the ECDIS performance standards outlined in IMO resolution MSC.232(82), the FMD-3100 is an ideal solution for both new installations and retrofits, meeting the ECDIS mandatory carriage requirements that have been phased in since July 2012.
