Dual polarimetry for high performance!
The WR-2120 is a compact dual polarimetric X-band solid-state doppler weather radar operating on 240 VAC.
REF: IMD0367600A
Compact X-band solid-state doppler weather radar WR-2120
Easy installation : very compact and lightweight (ø 1m, 65 kg); no heavy equipment required for installation; compatible with regular power outlet
Reduced operating costs : solid-state (reliable, less maintenance, long life solid-state transmission device; Low power consumption 100 V, 200 W)
High resolution & accurate measurements : outputs dual polarimetric doppler information (Zdr, Kdp) for computing diameter of precipitation particles as well as discriminating types of precipitation (rain, snow, etc.); 3D scan to observe the vertical structure of a cumulonimbus
Various software applications available: Various data formats used in major software packages, such as Baron Lynx and Vaisala IRIS Focus, are available
Carbon fiber antenna dish: reduction of the antenna weight; reduction of damage and mechanical stress due to shocks and vibrations

Reduction of sea clutter
Identifying and reducing sea clutter has long been a challenging task, primarily due to its high horizontal variability and strong return echoes. While the single-polarization Furuno WR-110 includes settings to mitigate sea clutter, the dual-polarimetric Furuno WR-2120 offers significantly improved clutter suppression, particularly at lower elevation angles.
The WR-2120's sea clutter reduction capabilities go well beyond basic ground clutter rejection, which typically filters out stationary objects. These advanced features have been tested and validated on multiple drill ship installations.

Detecting heavy rain
The dual-polarimetric Furuno WR-2120 radar also compensates for signal loss and attenuation caused by heavy rainfall. This is achieved through the use of the specific differential phase (Kdp), which corrects for the signal degradation resulting from the flattening of larger raindrops. Since Kdp is independent of transmitted and received power, it enables more accurate rainfall estimates, providing valuable support for informed decision-making.

Advancing Forecast Accuracy with Dual-Polarimetric Radar
Dual-polarimetric radar transmits and receives pulses simultaneously in both horizontal and vertical orientations. This enables it to capture returning signals that reveal the horizontal and vertical dimensions of targets, providing forecasters with more accurate estimates of their size, shape, and diversity.

Differentiate rain, snow, hail and melting snow
The Furuno WR-2120 provides data such as echo strength and phase difference, which can be used to determine the nature of detected particles, allowing forecasters to distinguish between snow, hail, and rain.
In contrast, the Furuno WR-110 transmits a single horizontal pulse, which can measure the intensity and movement of precipitation, but lacks the capability to identify precipitation types or differentiate between meteorological and non-meteorological targets.
The dual-polarimetric Furuno WR-2120 transmits two simultaneous pulses, one horizontal and one vertical. This dual-pulse system enables the radar to retrieve three-dimensional characteristics of targets, significantly enhancing weather analysis and forecasting. It allows for more accurate identification of precipitation type, better estimation of accumulation, and improved detection of tornadic signatures.
Moreover, dual-polarization radar can identify the melting layer in the atmosphere, the zone where snow and ice crystals begin to melt as temperatures rise above freezing. During this phase, the partially melted particles form a water-coated layer that reflects microwave energy strongly. Detecting this layer is particularly useful for decision support in both aviation and surface transportation.
