Furuno Supports Blind Sailor Mitsuhiro Iwamoto in Historic 2027 Pacific Crossing
Featured Topics
Furuno is honored to announce its sponsorship of the "HIRO's CHOICE" project, supporting Mitsuhiro Iwamoto ("Hiro"), a blind Japanese sailor based in the USA, as he prepares for a groundbreaking solo, non-stop trans-Pacific voyage in 2027.
This ambitious journey from San Diego, USA, to his hometown of Kumamoto, Japan, represents a world-first attempt under these conditions.
At Furuno, we believe in empowering sailors to overcome challenges and achieve the extraordinary. Our commitment to innovation and safety aligns perfectly with Hiro’s courageous spirit. By providing advanced navigation equipment and developing new technologies, we are dedicated to making his journey not only possible but also safer.
Innovating for Safety and Accessibility
To support Hiro’s unique needs, Furuno is equipping his 28-foot yacht, the Bristol Channel Cutter, with state-of-the-art navigation tools, including Radar and GPS devices. Additionally, in collaboration with Furuno Softech Co., Ltd., we are developing "Leena," a voice-based mobile app named after Hiro’s daughter. This app transforms essential navigation data—such as wind speed, direction, vessel location, and heading—into real-time audio, enabling Hiro to navigate without visual input. The app embodies Furuno’s mission to "make the invisible visible" and serves as a trusted companion throughout his voyage.
A Legacy of Overcoming Limits
Hiro, the world’s first blind ocean adventurer, lost his sight at 16 but refused to let it define his limits. In 2019, he made history by completing a non-stop trans-Pacific crossing with Doug Smith, becoming the first blind sailor to achieve this feat. His journey inspired countless individuals and organizations to push beyond perceived boundaries.
Technology as Hiro’s Second Vision
Hiro’s vessel is equipped with Furuno’s advanced navigational instruments, including a wind transducer, Satellite Compass, and Radar, which act as his "eyes" on the water. These technologies detect obstacles and ensure safe passage, while the TimeZero navigation software enables real-time data sharing with his shore support team via satellite communication.
Furuno’s Commitment to the Future
Furuno remains dedicated to supporting those who challenge the status quo and pave the way for a safer, more inclusive future. Our vision: "Achieve better safety, security, and comfort to bring about a society and sea navigation that considers the needs of people and the environment", drives us to continuously innovate. By developing new products, technologies, and features, we strive to make navigation easier and safer for all sailors, regardless of the challenges they face.
As Hiro prepares for his historic voyage, Furuno stands proudly by his side, demonstrating that with determination and the right technology, no obstacle is insurmountable. We invite you to follow Hiro’s journey and witness how innovation and resilience can create new possibilities on the open sea.
