riccardo castellaro
Originally from Genoa, Riccardo holds a degree in Marine Environmental Sciences and is a ski instructor. With a lifelong connection to the sea, he spends his summers navigating the Gulf of Genoa aboard his AlbaKora, where his passion for fishing and knowledge of the sea meet Furuno technology.
A Furuno partner for over 10 years, Riccardo has chosen the excellence of Furuno marine electronics to take on every challenge at sea, combining precision with intuition.
Today, aboard AlbaKora, he uses an integrated Furuno system that enables him to tackle a wide range of fishing techniques, from offshore trolling to tuna spinning. Drawing on his hands-on experience, he understands the importance of correctly configuring his instruments and interpreting even the most difficult-to-read traces. For him, systems such as TZTXL and TZMAP are essential tools for identifying targets, adapting to changing conditions and making the most of every opportunity.
His philosophy is simple: technology performs at its best when combined with experience and an in-depth knowledge of local waters. This combination allows Riccardo to approach every trip with confidence, turning the information on his displays into informed decisions and, sometimes, unforgettable catches.

a life at sea, always pushing the limits
Per Riccardo, fishing is much more than a passion. It is a constant challenge that calls for a deep understanding of the sea, keen observation, patience and the ability to interpret what is happening beneath the surface. His journey with Furuno began in 2015, following a frustrating experience with equipment that failed to meet his needs. “At a certain point, I told myself: enough is enough. I want the best!".
Through mutual friends, Riccardo was introduced to Furuno Italia, where he found a team ready to listen and help him choose the equipment best suited to his needs. What began as a search for better technology evolved into a relationship built on trust, expertise and, above all, a shared passion.
Over the years, Riccardo has followed the evolution of Furuno technology firsthand, experiencing how each new generation of equipment has expanded the possibilities at sea. Today, he considers the TZTXL and TZMAP systems an outstanding achievement.
“With the right settings and a little practice, you start seeing everything much more clearly. I can say with confidence that, without the right equipment on board, it would be difficult to achieve even half the catches I manage today.”
His experience is built on real-life situations at sea: identifying a tuna close to the seabed, tracking baitfish schools using SHIFT while offshore trolling, or adjusting gain and clutter settings to reveal a target that might otherwise go unnoticed. These are decisions that can make a real difference and determine the outcome of an entire fishing trip. Aboard AlbaKora, Riccardo can rely on a fully integrated Furuno system that has supported him in virtually every fishing and navigation situation he has encountered in the Ligurian Sea over the past ten years.
“I can’t recall a single situation in which my Furuno equipment hasn’t been able to fully support me.”
For Riccardo, this is where Furuno’s value truly lies: in the meeting of technology and experience. These are instruments designed to deliver precision and reliability, reaching their full potential in the hands of someone who knows the sea and experiences it every day. It is this dialogue between human expertise and innovation that opens up new opportunities, helps reveal signals from a different perspective and turns every trip at sea into an opportunity for discovery.
Aboard albakora: a complete furuno system
At the heart of AlbaKora’s onboard system is a 16-inch TZtouchXL, directly connected to a B265LH transducer. This setup is complemented by several integrated devices, designed to work together and provide a comprehensive view of the information needed for fishing and navigation.
NavNet TZtouchXL 16" | The heart of the system
The multifunction display is the central control hub of AlbaKora’s electronics. Connected directly to the B265LH transducer, it enables Riccardo to read the seabed and locate fish with precision, adjusting settings to suit sea conditions and fishing techniques. By fine-tuning gain and clutter, he can interpret echoes on the screen more effectively and track fish movements, even as they approach the bait..
DFF-3D | Exploring the seabed and finding new fishing grounds
With its Multi-Beam transducer, the DFF-3D helps Riccardo understand what lies beneath the boat and identify underwater structures and promising areas. It is a valuable tool for exploring the sea and discovering new spots to focus his fishing efforts.
DDF1 and CW Transducers | Flexibility that makes the difference
B265LH Transducers | Precision in seabed reading
Connected directly to the TZtouchXL, the B265LH is one of the key tools Riccardo relies on for fishing. It allows him to locate fish and track their echoes, fine-tuning the settings according to depth and sea conditions. This level of sensitivity makes a real difference, especially when he needs to distinguish individual targets and interpret what is happening beneath the boat.

NavNet TZtouchXL is Furuno’s flagship series of multifunction displays, available with 16", 22" and 24" glass displays, as well as 10" and 13" hybrid models. It features a powerful 1 kW fish finder with TruEcho CHIRPTM technology (TZT10X/13X/16X only), intuitive touch controls with edge-swipe operation, and full compatibility with NXT radar systems, the DFF-3D Multi-Beam sonar and NAVpilot autopilots.
The DFF-3D is a networked Multi-Beam sonar that transforms a NavNet display into a 120° view of the water column, from port to starboard. It provides real-time information on water depth, fish school locations and direction, as well as seabed characteristics, with a cross-track scanning range of up to 650 feet (approximately 198 metres).
The PBG (Personal Bathymetric Generator) function allows users to create high-resolution bathymetric maps, featuring detailed shaded relief representations of the seabed.
The B265LH is a bronze thru-hull CHIRP transducer that combines low and high frequencies to deliver excellent deep-water penetration and high target and seabed definition. It incorporates depth measurement and a fast-response temperature sensor, ensuring reliable performance even at speeds exceeding 30 knots. Ideal for sport fishing and professional marine applications.

the right technology for every fishing situation
When asked which technology really makes a difference during a day of fishing, Riccardo highlights the ability to adapt his equipment to every situation, making the most of the combined capabilities of the TZtouchXL, B265LH and DFF-3D.
For him, the key advantage lies in the ability to interpret what is happening beneath the boat and read sonar echoes according to sea conditions and the fishing technique being used. “It’s not enough to spot a fish on the screen. You need to interpret its echo, understand where it is and adjust your equipment to obtain the most useful information. By fine-tuning gain and clutter, I can refine the sonar image and focus on the targets that really matter."
Among the features he uses, SHIFT plays an important role, particularly when offshore trolling and searching for tuna. By following GPS tracks, Riccardo can focus on areas where he detects a higher concentration of baitfish, such as anchovies, and search for predators more strategically.
In short, for Riccardo, technology makes the difference when it helps him search more effectively, read the sea more accurately and be ready when the right opportunity comes along.
THE TECHNOLOGY BEHIND RICCARDO'S EQUIPMENT
The Personal Bathymetric Generator (PBG) allows users to create high-resolution, customised bathymetric maps featuring shaded relief representations of the seabed. These images combine shaded relief, bathymetric contour lines and variable colours to help identify underwater structures and changes in depth that attract fish.
Multi-Beam technology is designed to locate fish and map the seabed profile through advanced data acquisition and image processing, with operation at depths of up to 130 metres.
TruEcho CHIRP™ technology improves fish finder accuracy and target definition through advanced CHIRP signal processing, delivering clearer, high-resolution images of fish and seabed structures.
