Dimitris Spirou X Furuno Hellas Fishing Club
Meet Dimitris Spirou, Furuno Authorized Dealer & Furuno Hellas Fishing Club member
Dimitris Spirou was born in 1973 in a small coastal village on the Greek island of Corfu, and for as long as he can remember, he has been fascinated by the creatures swimming beneath the surface of the sea. He held his first fishing rod at the age of six, taught by his father, himself a passionate fisherman. Growing up in a seaside village, with a father who owned a small boat, gave him the perfect environment to develop what would become far more than a hobby: fishing became an essential part of his life.
He studied electronics, specializing in electronic circuit repair, and his technical background and his passion for fishing inevitably came together. He began installing fish finders for friends, and quickly became fascinated by these remarkable instruments that reveal fish swimming dozens of meters beneath a boat. His expertise is the product of extensive study of scientific literature on underwater acoustics, echo sounding and sonar systems, combined with countless hours at sea and hands-on experience in real fishing conditions.
In 2000, he turned his passion into a profession, entering the marine electronics industry with a specialization in sales, installation and, above all, practical fishfinder training, something genuinely innovative in the Greek market at the time. The major turning point came in 2011, when he met a representative of the newly established Furuno Hellas.
That meeting marked the beginning of a professional relationship that continues to this day: authorized Furuno dealer based in Corfu, Furuno power user, and founding member of the Furuno Hellas Fishing Team (FHFT), actively testing equipment and contributing practical feedback to the ongoing improvement of Furuno fishfinder technology. For the past 13 years, in cooperation with Furuno Hellas, he has been delivering fishfinder training seminars throughout Greece.

Why Furuno?
When Dimitris first began working with Furuno, adapting to the company's equipment philosophy was not easy: he had spent many years with another major marine electronics brand and was accustomed to a different approach.
What convinced him to stay was something much deeper than product specifications: the company's professionalism, its organizational structure, its reliability and consistency toward its dealers, and above all the exceptional quality of its products.
He firmly believes this commitment to quality reflects the values traditionally associated with Japanese manufacturing culture: precision, responsibility, discipline and respect for the customer. Today, his relationship with Furuno's management and his colleagues goes far beyond a conventional business relationship.
"We have developed genuine friendships and a strong sense of belonging to the same family," he explains, "sharing knowledge, experiences and, most importantly, our common passion for fishing and marine technology."

Furuno On Board: Dimitris' Own Setup
Dimitris fishes mainly in the northern Ionian Sea around Corfu, where the mild Mediterranean climate allows him on the water most days of the year. His boat is a 5.20-meter Italian-built GS Nautica open console powered by a 100 hp Yamaha outboard, carefully customized so that he can launch and retrieve it entirely alone, an independence he values because fishing alone lets him concentrate fully on understanding the operation and performance of the fishfinders he tests. The boat also welcomes customers who travel from across Greece for practical, on-the-water training.
Over the years, this small boat has hosted virtually every generation of Furuno fish finder since 2012, from legendary models such as the GP1870F and FCV-587 to today's advanced systems. His current setup consists of a NavNet TZtouchXL 13" multifunction display connected to a DFF-3D multibeam fish finder and an Airmar TM265LH CHIRP transducer, a combination particularly well suited to fishing at depths of 100 meters and beyond.
Alongside it, he has installed the new Furuno TZMAP13, operating with two Echonautics transducers: a CW 50/200 kHz, 600 W model and a 600 W CHIRP transducer.
"This combination gives me excellent target definition and high-resolution sonar imaging, while taking advantage of two of Furuno's most valuable fishfinding technologies: Bottom Discrimination and ACCU-FISHTM," he notes.
Having both systems working side by side allows him to compare their performance, understand their individual strengths and demonstrate their capabilities to other fishermen under real conditions. For Dimitris, this is where technology truly comes to life.

NavNet TZtouchXL is Furuno's flagship series of multifunction displays, available in extra-large glass displays from 10 to 24 inches. It incorporates a powerful internal 1 kW TruEcho CHIRPTM fish finder, edge-swipe touch control, and full compatibility with NXT radars, DFF-3D sounder and NAVpilot autopilots.
The DFF-3D is a network multibeam sounder that turns a NavNet display into a 120-degree port-to-starboard view of the water column, showing the depth and direction of fish schools and the seabed condition in real time, with side scanning up to 650 feet. Its PBG function generates custom high-resolution shaded-relief charts of the seafloor.
The TZMAP range belongs to Furuno's new line of stand-alone multifunction displays with built-in TruEcho CHIRPTM fish finders, bringing the power of TZ MAPS cartography to smaller vessels. It offers integration with the TZ iBoat app and supports AI Routing, helping boaters plan smarter, safer routes.

Why Should Someone Choose Furuno?
When customers ask why they should invest in a Furuno fish finder, Dimitris answers with four fundamental advantages.
First, outstanding product quality: Furuno is a manufacturer with its own engineering expertise, product development and technology, not simply generic OEM devices carrying a different brand name.
Second, reliable warranty and long-term support: a genuine two-year warranty backed by professional technical support, with a wide range of spare parts available even for many older models.
Third, innovation and advanced fishing technology: continuous development of features such as BDS, ACCU-FISHTM, the TZ iBoat application, high-resolution fishing charts and intuitive interfaces that transform complex sonar information into practical, everyday knowledge.
Fourth, and for Dimitris perhaps the most important: exceptional after-sales service and personal technical support. Selling a fish finder is only the beginning of the relationship; the real value comes afterward, when the fisherman needs guidance and practical advice.
He personally provides telephone technical support seven days a week, including troubleshooting and real fishing advice. His goal is not simply to sell a product, but to help every customer understand their fishfinder, gain confidence in using it, and ultimately become a more successful fisherman.
More Than a Company
"Those of us who belong to the Furuno family genuinely feel that we are part of something greater than a company," Dimitris says. "We share a common philosophy built on trust, quality, commitment, innovation and respect, reflected both in the equipment we develop, test and represent, and in the relationships we build with our customers. To me, Furuno is not simply a brand I work with. It is a family, a professional philosophy and an essential part of a lifelong passion for fishing."
And after all these years, every time he steps aboard his boat, switches on his Furuno equipment and looks at the screen, he still feels the same excitement he experienced as a six-year-old boy holding his first fishing rod.
That passion has never changed. Only the technology has evolved.
