Meet Vangelis Kanakis Manager, Fishing & Yachting Department
Born in Athens, the historic heart of Greece, Vangelis Kanakis embodies the maritime spirit that defines Furuno Hellas. As Manager of the Fishing & Yachting Department, he leads the division with the conviction of a true specialist: someone who understands both the demands of professional fishing operations and the expectations of the recreational yachting world.
Vangelis has been part of the Furuno Hellas story since its very foundation in 2009. Seventeen years of unwavering dedication mean that he has not merely witnessed the company's growth, he has actively shaped it. Through market evolutions, technological transitions, and the changing needs of Greek users, Vangelis has been a constant: a trusted point of reference for customers and colleagues alike.
His longevity with the company is no coincidence. In an industry built on reliability, Vangelis represents exactly that, deep product knowledge, a genuine passion for the sea, and an enduring commitment to serving Greece's fishing and yachting communities with the excellence the Furuno name stands for.
When you work with Vangelis, you are not just speaking with a manager. You are speaking with someone who has spent nearly two decades helping Greek maritime professionals navigate toward safer, smarter, and more productive voyages.

A Lifelong Bond with the Sea, And with Furuno
"My connection with the sea began before I could even fully appreciate it. My father started taking me fishing when I was just five years old, and from those early days on the water, fishing became part of who I am."
Vangelis is, above all, a passionate angler. His preferred techniques reflect a true specialist's depth: trolling and vertical fishing from the boat for bottom species, complemented by shore fishing with spinning and eging when the occasion calls for it.
But ask him what fishing truly means, and his answer goes far beyond technique:
"Fishing is a connection with nature. It is the blue of the sea that brings peace to the mind. It awakens the instincts of the hunter. It is the bond with friends, the achievement of the goal when the fish is finally caught, and the continuous search for better equipment and smarter solutions to reach it."
This lifelong pursuit, he explains, became his greatest professional asset: "It was the key to understanding customers' needs. When you use the products yourself, you know exactly how every function works, and how much each one matters on the water."
The relationship with Furuno, remarkably, predates his career at Furuno Hellas. Long before joining the company in 2009, Vangelis made his choice as a fisherman:
"Furuno was my choice for fishing before I ever joined the company. I saw that most professional fishermen relied on Furuno, so I followed the same path, and the results were excellent."
Today, that personal conviction translates into authentic expertise: a man who does not simply sell marine electronics, but who has lived with them on the water for decades.

Furuno On Board: Vangelis' Own Setup
Vangelis does not simply recommend Furuno equipment, he runs it on his own boat, every time he heads out to fish. His onboard suite is a working demonstration of the solutions he presents to his customers:
NavNet TZtouchXL — the heart of the system.
Paired with a combination of CW and CHIRP transducers, it delivers exceptionally clear target detection. Features such as ACCU-FISHTM, which estimates the size of individual fish, and Bottom Discrimination (BDS), which analyses the composition of the seabed, give him the decisive edge: knowing not only where the fish are, but what the ground below is made of.
DFF-3D Multibeam Sounder — his favourite discovery tool.
"The best tool to scan and find new fishing areas," Vangelis explains. With its Personal Bathymetric Generator (PBG), the DFF-3D builds high-resolution seabed data directly onto the chart, revealing hidden structure and promising new grounds.
DRS2D-NXT Radar — safety after dark.
This solid-state Doppler radar is, in his words, "very useful for safe navigation at night", instantly highlighting hazardous targets approaching the vessel.
NAVpilot-300 — comfort and efficiency.
"It provides a more relaxed and comfortable navigation experience," Vangelis notes, "while also helping to reduce fuel consumption", a benefit that matters both to his fishing trips and to the operating costs of every customer he advises.

NavNet TZtouchXL is Furuno's flagship series of multifunction displays, available in extra-large glass displays from 10 to 24 inches. It incorporates a powerful internal 1 kW TruEcho CHIRPTM fish finder, edge-swipe touch control, and full compatibility with NXT radars, DFF-3D sounder and NAVpilot autopilots.
The DFF-3D is a network multibeam sounder that turns a NavNet display into a 120-degree port-to-starboard view of the water column, showing the depth and direction of fish schools and the seabed condition in real time, with side scanning up to 650 feet. Its PBG function generates custom high-resolution shaded-relief charts of the seafloor.
The DRS2D-NXT is a 19-inch solid-state Doppler radar with no magnetron and no preheating time, offering low power consumption. Its revolutionary Target AnalyzerTM automatically colour-codes hazardous targets approaching the vessel, while Fast Target TrackingTM and RezBoostTM beam sharpening deliver outstanding detection and resolution.
The NAVpilot-300 is a revolutionary autopilot with Fantum FeedbackTM, which removes the need for a physical rudder feedback unit, and adaptive learning technology for unmatched outboard performance. Its fishing-focused modes, such as FishHunter and SABIKITM, which hold position over a wreck or reef, make it as valuable for anglers as it is for comfortable cruising.

The Favourite Technology: Multibeam And What It Reveals
When asked which technology makes the real difference during a day of fishing, Vangelis does not hesitate: "Multibeam technology makes the difference. The DFF-3D combined with the new TZ MAPS, that is where the magic happens."
For him, the power of this pairing lies in how much it reveals, and how quickly: "Functions like ACCU-FISHTM and BDS will help you detect and understand everything under the boat, even if you are a beginner."
And at the centre of his setup stands one feature he considers a genuine game-changer:
"TZ MAPS BathyVision provides a detailed 3D visualization of the seabed, helping fishermen clearly understand underwater structure, depth changes, drop-offs, and potential fishing spots. It is a valuable tool for identifying productive areas and improving fishing efficiency."
In other words: technology that turns hours of searching into minutes of fishing.
About the technology
Personal Bathymetric Generator (PBG) allows you to create your own custom high-resolution shaded-relief charts of the seafloor. Bottom images are drawn with shaded relief, depth contours and variable colours, making it easy to identify the hidden structures and ridges that hold fish, presented in a simple, easy-to-interpret picture that turns every pass over new water into mapped knowledge.
The Multibeam technology is designed for fish location and seabed profiling, featuring advanced imaging and processing capabilities that operate at depths of up to 130 meters.
BathyVision delivers dynamic, high-resolution seabed relief shading in colour and with configurable contour lines, down to an astonishing 3-inch resolution, evealing drop-offs, hidden structure and high-potential fishing areas at a glance.
ACCU-FISHTM analyses echo returns to compute and display the size of individual fish on the screen, while Bottom Discrimination (BDS) identifies the seabed composition — rocks, gravel, sand or mud — with its corresponding probability.
